Chapter Seven

Mordred made sure the wrists of the unconscious soldier were cable tied, as were the man’s ankles, yet he only shackled the feet of the man with the probable broken sternum. That soldier wasn’t going anywhere even if he did wake up.

Once satisfied that he wasn’t about to have people running down the stairs after him, Mordred re-entered the stairwell and made his way down to his original entry floor. Remy, Zamek, Mac, Diana, and Irkalla were waiting, with the latter two having found some jeans and t-shirts to wear.

“Did you get changed?” Mordred asked.

“I’m not ruining that dress,” Diana said.

“What she said.” Irkalla jabbed her thumb in Diana’s direction. “Mostly, I just didn’t want to get blood on it.”

“So, do we have a plan?” Zamek asked. “The runes haven’t flicked off yet.”

“No,” Mordred said.

“They’ve probably used the main security room on the first floor,” Mac said. “They can override anyone else accessing features from there.”

“Zamek, can you remove these runes from here?” Mordred asked.

“Where are the runes?” Zamek asked Mac.

“In the walls,” Mac said. “They’re written on the steel beams.”

“Nice,” Zamek said with a knowing nod. “Runes in a building this size have to work on a cascading system. It’s too big and cumbersome to have them all work individually, so you’d have the main runes and then smaller ones that bounce off it, using the power. I break enough of them, they all come tumbling down. There would be a room dedicated to rune work. You see anything like that?”

“Thirtieth floor,” Mac said. “The runes give off a purple glow.”

“The computer rooms?” Mordred asked. “That has a purple glow thing? Good job I didn’t kick the door down and blow something up.”

“Yourself, mostly,” Zamek said. “Get me up there, and we’ll remove the runes. The second I start, if they have anyone on the staff who knows how they work, they’re going to know what I’m doing, and where.”

“I’ll go with him,” Diana said. “They ruined my night out. Nothing is getting by me.”

“Okay,” Mordred said. “Irkalla, Mac, and Remy, you’re with me. We’re going to get down to the entrance and stop whatever they’re doing. Mac, you have access to the vault, yes?”

“And the security systems,” Mac said. “But judging from what they’ve done so far, they’re not going to just let us stop them.”

“We’ll figure that bit out,” Mordred said. “We need our abilities back. After that, they’re not going to be able to stop us.”

Zamek and Diana headed off to the rune room and Mordred asked the others, “Hel talking to the police?”

“She’s let them know you’re here,” Irkalla said. “She’s with Ellie, so between the two of them, none of the humans are going to try anything stupid like storming the building.”

“And William?” Mordred asked as the four of them entered the stairwell and began their descent.

“Can’t find him,” Mac said. “No idea where he is. Which is weird, because there’s no way he’d have just run off and left everyone. And there’s no way he’s working with these idiots.
